Museet for Holbæk og Omegn (Holbæk Museum of Local History)

The museum of local history in Holbæk consists of 11 old buildings dating from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In no other market town in Denmark is an entire complex of buildings preserved in the old town centre, where all of the buildings still remain in their original locations, except for the merchant's house, which was moved to the museum in 1937. Following Ahlgade, the main street in Holbæk, along Klosterstræde, instantly provides a sense of old Holbæk - especially the row of buildings on the right from number 8 to number 18, which form a single long façade. The oldest buildings are all half-timbered constructions, but several of these have stucco facades that hide the timber frames. In 1998, the museum's lobby with its shop and small café was installed in Holbæk's former town hall, located at Klosterstræde 18, and designed by F. F. Friis in 1844. The complex contains very broad-based collections of artefacts relating to the town of Holbæk and its immediate surroundings. The exhibitions are largely arranged as interiors - upper-class living rooms, farmhouse rooms, a general store and various workshops. These are supplemented with exhibitions dealing with agriculture, traditional costumes, lighting, tobaccos, glass and ceramics, etc. In addition, the museum contains a fairly large archaeological collection. Artefacts recovered from the Stone-Age settlement found in the Åmose bog figure prominently in this collection. Interesting special exhibitions are held regularly.
