This museum specialises in the history of seafaring. In former times, the town was known for the presence of large ocean-going sailing ships in the harbour and the shipbuilding industry. One of the largest collections of ship paintings and model ships in Denmark is on display in the museum, along with a collection of ships in bottles and ethnographical artefacts from the Far East and Africa. The prosperitiy of the region can be seen in its traditional costumes, furniture, silverware and a panelled room. There are also embroidered works by the clairvoyant maiden Jomfru Fanny, and a section devoted to death and burial, including a coffin containing a Bronze Age skeleton.
