Silkeborg Museum was established as a local museum in 1904, and was set up in the Hovedgården building in 1951. This building is the oldest in the town, built in 1767. In 1991, it was extended with a new annex. The museum''s collections are designed to shed light on the history of the town and surrounding area from prehistoric times up to the present day. Of particular interest is the comprehensive permanent exhibition dealing with the Iron Age. This exhibition contains the '"Tollund Man'", the remains of a man that were preserved in a bog and dated to c. 400 BC, and the '"Elling Woman'", dated to c. 200 BC.
